Judging Voice Quality is Highly Subjective Furthermore, it does not Determine Success
"And who will be buying her cd's....amateurs! I am not a professional, but never professed that I was either. I have merely said for me Fantasia is not ear appeal. Its that high pitch to her voice. I have also said that she seems to have a fan base so she should do well for herself."
This is precisely my point. You do not know if Fantasia will be successful or not because you are not a professional with an eye for a good thing when you sense it, nor a marketing research analyst with sound consumer data to back your arguments. The bottom line is that, no one can really tell for sure what will take place in the future, except, of course, a few mystics and clairvoyants.
It is true, it is not the professionals that will buy the majority of Fantasia's CDs. But it is the professionals that shape public opinions. Only amateurs believe that it is the quality of one's voice that sells music. If that were the case, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Hendricks would be penniless. The best voice in the world is meaningless if the industry is not behind it. Anyone can be a success if the industry deems it so. It is not even talent or mass appeal that determines success. It is the industry on a whole: packaging, promotion, distribution, airplay, publicity etc. Mass appeal can be created!
And when you have a ready-made talent and marketing gift like Fantasia, with all the media and industry behind her, the question is not when she will become successful but where she will debut on the charts
and in what genre she will be most successful.

Remark:
"Once again, America screwed up...the real "winner" went home weeks ago when LaToya London was booted. Did anyone not really listen to this girl !!!! Great Talent !!!!"
Response:
Nonsense! LaToya is an excellent singer, the best in this years AI competition but she lacked:
SALEPERSONSHIP (most Important)
- Delivery the ability to paint a picture of sincerity, earnestness, and wholeheartedness? Latoya failed to exude self-expression, enthusiasm, animation, and an emotional appeal. She needed more variety in her performances. For example: pacing oneself, creating word picture, painting a scene, capturing a mood, using the full range of ones voice, creating a well-defined climax.
- Relationship with her Audience: she did not involve her audience in her performances. Directly or indirectly, the audience participated with applauds but not deep emotional involvements.
- Imagination: her performances were of the cut and dry familiar rendition and seldom involved risk or featured originality and uniqueness?
Diana had similar problems. I do believe, however, that Latoya can sing better than Diana and Fantasia. She is definitely stronger technically. But very few can match Fantasia, in or out of the competition, as a total package. She is, without question, a complete performer and total entertainer. She is probabably one of the best "things" that happened to the music industry in quite a while.
Overall, I don't think that Diana performed that well in the AI competition. I did not feel an emotional intensity in her performances. Her performances were a bit dis-jointed and somewhat mechanical. They were safe performances and perhaps that is why you consider them good. A good judge, however, is more concerned with how well a performer capitalize on his or her opportunities: to be unique, original, creative, to capture his or her audience, to pace oneself, to build smooth transitions etc.
A performer is also expected to create a well-defined climax and that's where Diana is excellent and is very strong. More importantly, this is what people remember the most and vote on. Professional judges on the other hand, is more concerned with the foundation that leads to the climax. Looking beyond the obvious at elements in a performance that an amateur often forgets or overlooks.
With Regards to Public Choices in the American Idol Competition
There are four possible reasons why LaToya was voted off the show and not Jasmine:
- Simon's criticism of Jasmine was hash and the fact that she cried, most likely, gained her a few sympathy votes.
- The judges probably thought that Jasmine was the weakest competitor and appeared to have tried to influence the vote by voicing their preferences. This probably created a backlash of defiance in favor of the rejected competitor.
- Jasmine's supporters were most likely determined to keep her hope alive by "pulling out all the stops", including a massive "abuse" of the voting system with a large influx of multiple voting behavior
- LaToya's first performance was technically sound but lacked emotional appeal. Her comments following the performance also did not help. In such public performances, enthusiasm is important. One must sell oneself to one's audience. She did not do that and appeared not to care. This was also the same attitude that caused Jennifer's downfall.
Every good performer, marketer and politician knows: emotions SELLs not talent! Whether she knows it is not, Jasmine showed her hunger to be there. And America granted her wishes! There is no need for the conspiracy theories.
